Cover Art FAQs

You say you do covers?
Well, let’s see some of this!

::eBook Covers::

::Full Wrap Covers::

How much do these covers cost, and how long do they take to do?

$50 and up For a premade design from the "rejected" files. I will change the text and make small changes to the image if needed. If the image(s) used is from my stock collection there will be no additional fee, however if we need to purchase the license from a stock photo site such as canstockphoto, dreamstime, etc. then the price of the image license will be added to the final cost.

This kind of cover can generally be completed in a few days, counting time for us to send it back and forth, and any editing/changes.

$65+ For a simple cover made from preexisting art or photos, either provided by you or from my stock photo collection There is no additional charge for my stock photographs. However, If you want me to find a stock photograph from another source; ie. dreamstime, etc, that requires payment, that amount will be added to the cover price, or you can choose to purchase it yourself and send me the file(s) as an attachment.

This kind of cover can generally be completed in a few days, counting time for us to send it back and forth, and any editing/changes.

This price also includes tweaking, or fixing pre existing covers made by someone else.

$65 – a cover with simple, original artwork aka a main figure/figures and very little background OR basic vector art.

This kind of cover can take a couple of weeks or more. I will send you the sketch for the artwork for approval before I create the final version. This can save us both a lot of time.

$85 + - a cover with original, detailed artwork. This includes art media, or painting, or extreme photo manipulation. There is no additional charge for my stock photographs. However, If you want me to find a stock photograph from another source; ie. dreamstime, etc, that requires payment, that amount will be added to the cover price, or you can choose to purchase it yourself and send me the file(s) as an attachment.

$45 + - a back cover created as a single image for use in POD cover creators or for the interior files of an eBook. If the back cover requires the creation of additional artwork then the price may be higher. There is no additional charge for my stock photographs. However, If you want me to find a stock photograph from another source; ie. dreamstime, etc, that requires payment, that amount will be added to the cover price, or you can choose to purchase it yourself and send me the file(s) as an attachment.

This can take a few days, depending on how much work is needed and how quickly you get back to me. You will need to send me anything you want included on the back cover including the descriptions, author bios, copyright information, links, etc.

Wrap around cover = cost of front cover + back cover (aka a $45 cover + 40$ for a back cover = $85).

I usually prefer to do the front cover first, as a separate image, then incorporate it into the wrap around unless the image is going to wrap the whole cover.
MARCH 2014: I am no longer doing these for any POD except CreateSpace and Lulu. Sorry.

Didn't you used to be faster?

Yes, I did. I used to do two covers a month. Now I do twenty plus, as well as formatting, editing, beta reading, my website, four blogs, and my own books/stories not to mention family and "real life" obligations and then there's that ever annoying sleep. Plus, I have some health issues that take me away from the computer from time to time. Because of all this, I'm lots slower than I used to be. I still try to get covers done as quickly as possible, however.

Why are your covers so cheap?

My covers are cheap because this is not a full time job. This is something I do because I enjoy it.

I've contacted multiple cover artists...

Please, let me stop you right there. I understand that some authors prefer to work this way, and that is your choice, but I don't. If you wish to have several artists creating work for you and then plan to choose the one you like from the selection, then please do not contact me. This may sound harsh, but my time is limited and it's not fair to me, or the other authors I'm working with, especially as many authors who do this then won't pay for the work I've done. I am sure that you are 100% honest, but I have been burned too many times to take the risk. I do respect your right to commission artists this way, but please respect my feelings as well and only commission me if you're serious about my doing the cover.

My book is a thriller/romance/nonfiction/YA/Christian/Gay/Lesbian/erotica/etc.
Are you still interested?

Yes. I can make a cover for any genre, in a variety of styles. You just need to let me know what you're looking for. The only books I won't create covers for are atheist manifestos, or books whose only purpose is to openly mock ANY religion because I don't feel comfortable lending my name to them. Anything else is fair game. Adult language and situations don't bother me. I read them, myself.

I sent you an email, so why haven't I heard from you?

If you sent me an email and have not heard from me in a couple of days there may be one of five reasons:

1: I did not get the mail.
2: It may be in the Spam folder. I admit, I don't check that as often as I should. I forget.
3: You sent your mail Sunday or Monday. I am never available on Sundays or Mondays, and I will not normally answer mails on those days as I have other responsibilities that require my presence.
4: I may be unavailable due to some health related issues.
If you're worried, then please resend the mail.

So how can I tell if one of those things have happened?

I'm making a concerted effort to keep my Facebook updated about things that mean I'm absent. You can check it at http://www.facebook.com/bridgette.bandell, or on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/RedHairStepKid. If there are only posts about blogs then I haven't been on, as the blog posts are pre set up and auto-posted and the Facebook and twitter notifications are auto generated.

Do you work on more than one cover at a time?

Yes. I try to juggle everyone's covers at the same time. This means that if an author needs it in a hurry they will be top priority for the day, while someone who said "no hurry" may have to wait. If you need it quickly, then you need to tell me. I take authors at their word. If you say "I don't need it until x-date", then I will shoot for that date.

Do you have any pre made covers for me to choose from?

No, not at this time. However, after I do have them, any of them can have the title/author name, etc. changed. The fee for a "salvaged cover" is 35$ (this includes artwork or manipulated covers) plus any stock images I might need to purchase. Yeah, it's a savings.

Where can I get a photo to use on my book cover?

You can get photos from many sources; you can take them yourself, you can buy them from stock photography places, you can search for a free Creative Commons licensed photograph on flickr (http://search.creativecommons.org/
If you're stumped for a cover idea, you can email me and maybe we can brinstorm some ideas, however this will make your cover take longer.

What stock photography sites do you use?

I have accounts at Dreamstimeistockphoto , ShutterstockCanstockphotoFotolia and 123rf. But, where your wallet is concerned, I recommend canstockphoto as they have the cheapest images available that may be used for book covers. 123rf appears to be the cheapest, but in order to use their images for book covers you must purchase the extended license, which runs about $100 an image, while many images on canstock and dreamstime are $4 and up. If you find an image you like at a site not listed, I can create an account there and purchase the image, or you can purchase the image and send it to me as an attachment in an email.

How much do stock photos cost?

I will generally send you the link to the page the stock photo is listed on. To determine the price check the pricing table on that page. For canstock it is one dollar per credit (ie 10 credits = $10) and for Dreamstime and Istock it is $1.50 per credit (ie 10 credits = $15). Shutterstock images are always $10 a piece. If the image does not fit in your budget then let me know! Chances are we can find something else, or work something out.

Why would I need a stock photo?

If your cover is going to include photographs of people or houses, then it's best to purchase a stock photo because they will have a model or property release associated with them. Also, sometimes you can't find what you want for free.

What does the basic license on those stock photos let us do?

Each site is different and if you want to read the legal stuff then I suggest you visit the site and read it for yourself. Basically you can use the book cover with the image to print so many (usually 499,000 copies), use it on your websites, blogs, etc etc. with no additional fees (except through 123rf.com). If you sell more than 499,000 PRINT copies of your book, then you will need to purchase the extended license (which is usually around 100$) You do not need me to do this for you, though I am happy to if you prefer it.

Can you take a photo just for my cover?

Maybe. It depends on what you want a photo of and whether I have the necessary resources on hand. I won't buy props because in that case it's cheaper for you to just buy a stock image.

What if I have my own images?

That's fantastic! But please make sure you can legally use those images. This means that you have GOTTEN PERMISSION FROM THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE PHOTO. You can NOT just take a photo from a google image search and use it on a cover because that is illegal. The photgrapher, or artist, owns that image the same way you own your book, and just as no one can take your book and publish it without your permission, you can't publish someone else's work without their permission. By sending me an image, you warrant that you have the legal right to use the image on a book cover, and you take full responsibility for any legal repercussions - in other words if you didn't get proper permission and the copyright holder wants to sue someone, they can't sue me.

What if I have someone else make my cover but I want your photo or art?

My photos are all licensed creative commons, which means you may use them - for free - for a book cover, website, etc. as long as you credit me. I would happily accept a donation though ;)

How does the process work?

Send a message to bookwormproductions123@gmail.com. If the subject says BOOK COVER, that would be great! Don't know what to write? Here's a sample letter:

Hello, I heard about you from ____ . I'm looking for a book cover for my ebook/paperback "book Title"by "author name". I am publishing through smashwords/amazon/whatever. The book is a (insert genre, such as thriller, romance, etc) that is about (any info you want to share). For the cover I thought (insert your cover idea and/or any links you might have to images etc). Thank you.

Once you send me your idea, I'll send you a link to a sketch/mock cover as soon as possible, for your approval. If you want something changed at this stage, please tell me, because it's easier to change it then. Once we have it the way you want it, I'll make a tentative final version and email you a link to it. If you’re happy with it, then I will email you the final version(s). If not, I will make any changes, and send you the link again, etc.

IMPORTANT: When the cover is finished and I send the final files please, please, please, let me know that you received them! No, we don't need to be the best of friends, but I appreciate a note that just says "Thanks, got it" so I know cyber space didn't gobble them up. You've paid for this, and I want to make sure you get what you paid for!

After I send you an email, how soon will I hear from you?

I'll try to answer you as quickly as possible, but as I mentioned earlier, this isn't my full time job and I have a lot of commitments. I'm also on a night schedule, which means I may be busy off doing other work. If that's a problem, then I'm sorry, but I can't be chained to the computer 24/7. Though I try to answer queries within 48 hours, or less, it may take up to a week. If you haven't heard from me by then, then I probably didn't get your email.

Why did you send me to someone else?

I may have to pass on your project, in which case I will recommend an associate I think would be a good fit. It does not mean that I don't think your idea is compelling, or that I don't like you, or anything else. It simply means I am short on time and might not be able to get your work done in time and want you to be able to get what you need in the time it is needed in.

Can I call you on the phone?

Sure! However, keep in mind that I don't like giving out my actual phone number so I route business calls through a google voice number until I can afford a business line. My Google Voice number is (317) 376-8096. I normally work well through email because I'm on night hours, so most people are asleep while I'm working. However, a book cover is primarily a visual thing, not a verbal one.

Can I send you something through snail mail?

Sure. Not everyone has access to a scanner, and sometimes they have sketches or pictures they want to share. Ask for my address and I'll send it to you. Though, be aware it takes at least one extra day for me to get mail because we live in a rural location.

What if I have a very specific idea for my cover?

Fantastic! If this is the case, then please be as specific as possible in your descriptions. In fact, you might even want to try to make a "mock cover". If you can't draw even a stick person don't worry, just draw a square and label it A. then, in the description, explain to me what A is. For example, "A- a woman with curly brown hair wearing a red dress. She should be smiling."

You can also send me images, or links to images, that look like what you have in mind. This can be especially useful if you know exactly what your characters look like. However, keep in mind that I can't just "re-draw" someone else's image. I can create something similar, but to just outright copy it is copyright infringement and stealing and other nasty things.

NOTE: If we are using stock images be aware we may not find EXACTLY what you have in mind. You may need to compromise or hire an artist to paint your image. Ask and I can recommend some.

What if I have absolutely no idea what I want for a cover?

This can be hard, but don't worry. We'll come up with something. Chances are, you know what the feel of your book is, or what emotions your book conveys. Is it a creepy story? A sad story? A book about how to make cookies? All of those things will help contribute to what your cover should be. So, if you have no idea for a cover at all, please give me some information about the book itself and what you want to convey and I'll see what I can come up with. However, I need more than just the title and genre. A synopsis goes a long way.

How many "tweaks" or "redos" do I get?

I don't really like to put a number on it, because every project is different and there's a big leap between changing a font color and creating brand new artwork. Because my prices are low, I ask that you please limit the redos to three. Excessive rework will result in extra fees. However, I also offer a skype screen sharing edit at the very end of the process if you want to have specific edits done and be able to not have to bounce emails with examples back and forth for hours on end lol! Just ask me for the $20 skype edit addition when ordering and I will add it to the invoice.

I've got the files and already paid, but I've changed my mind. Do I have to pay for a new version?

If you have already agreed to the cover and received the files, and then decide that you want a completely different cover, then yes, you will have to pay as though it were a brand new cover because that's exactly what it is.

When/How do I pay you?

Payment is expected before I mail the files to you. I used to collect payment after the files were sent but I'm afraid a couple of rotten apples have ruined that. To pay you can use paypal or a personal check. PayPal should be sent to bridgette1985@gmail.com (It will come up as Bookworm Productions) I prefer to be able to send you an invoice so please try not to just send the money and email later as I will not be able to know what the money is for and file it into the appropriate account. Please let me know that you've sent the payment so I can keep an eye out for it. If you want to pay by check or money order then contact me and I'll send you the information.
Please DO NOT send payments through paypal through the email on the contact me tab - there is no bank account associated with that account and so it is a real hassle for me to access funds in it. Normally I will send you a refund and ask you to please send it to the correct address.

Let's say I'm broke, or very nearly broke. Do you do free/reduced covers?

Hmmmmm. That's a good question. If you really are desperate, then maybe we can agree to a trade of some kind. I'm always looking for music for book trailers, or maybe you're good at formatting documents or web programming, or something else that I need? Hit me up and we'll see what we can come up with.

So who owns this cover?

Once you have the cover it belongs to you. If the photo and/or artwork came from me, you can do whatever you want with it; move it to a different medium, make t-shirts out of it, use it on your business cards, make wallpaper for your website, whatever. You won’t need to pay me any royalty fees! The artist fees are one time only. I do reserve the right, however, to use the cover in my albums, portfolio, website or for linking purposes, etc.

If the cover features photography or artwork by someone else, then you may not be able to do some things with it such as create printed materials, etc, depending on how the image is licensed. If it is a stock photo I purchased, ask and I will send you the link the the stock site's licenses (or you can find it yourself). The images are actually licensed to YOU, not to me, so I can not reuse them but you may be able to. If you want acopy of the license let me know and I'll send it to you, too.

How do I credit you?

When the cover is finished I will send you the exact wording you'll need to include in the front matter or copyright area in the front of your book. If you sent me the images used, then remember to credit the source of the artwork or photo, even if it's yourself.

some examples of cover credits are:

(If the artwork came from me as well as the layout)
Cover Art and Design by Bookworm Productions.
(If the photo came from me as well as the layout)
Cover Photo and Design by Bookworm Productions.
(If the artwork or photo are from someone else and I just put it together) Cover by Bookworm Productions.

What will I get?

You will get four image files; one will be a thumbnail version that you can use in blogs, signatures, and other promo material. Next is a High Res (High Resolution) png saved at 300 dpi for you to upload as your cover on Smashwords per the newest Smashwords guidelines), then a 2500px (pixel) size for Amazon Kindle and a 2000 pixel size for Barnes & Noble (who have recently updated their requirements). Should you ever choose to move your book from an ebook to a print book via Lulu, Create Space or others, you will need the high res image. Because of the print "trim", however, some covers may need slight alterations to be print ready, so if you know you're going to print your book please tell me in advance.

When you publish an eBook, the cover size and book size have usually very little to do with one another. If you need cover dimensions other than 6x9 please tell me at the beginning. If you don't know what size cover you need, you should check the FAQ's or help areas of your publisher's site. If that doesn't help, you can try to contact the publisher directly and ask.

If your book is going directly to a POD, please be sure to tell me what trim size you need - ie 6x9 or 5x8, etc before I start work on the cover.

Can I get more than one copy of my cover in different sizes? For instance will you make me a one for my blog or a .gif version?

Sure. I'd be happy to send you other sizes or other file extensions (example.jpg .gif .png, etc.). I know that some sites will only accept certain sized images or types, so it's not a problem.

Will you send me the photoshop files?

Yes...but - because I don't exclusively use photoshop, some files will not be able to be sent via layered photo. However if you ask I can keep track and make one for you.

Will you send me the stock image we licensed?

Sure, If you want them I will. Just let me know. But, keep in mind you can't use them for another project that the license doesn't cover. Each stock site has different licensing requirements, so be sure to check them before you use the image for something else. (Unless you ask otherwise, all images are standard license).

What if I change my mind?

There are many reasons you might change your mind during the cover process. Maybe you've decided not to publish your book, or maybe you've found someone else's work you like better. I understand this, however, if I've already completed a cover for you, or done a large amount of work, it's karmatically "not nice" to just disappear and leave me hanging with nothing - especially if I've already spent money on stock images for you. Whether you use the cover or not, I still spent the same amount of time on it. I will still charge you at least a partial fee.

I want to display my cover on my blog.
Can I use the link you gave me?

When you use the preview link I send you to link to your image on a website, blog or forum, you are "hotlinking" - this means you are "calling up" the image from one website (in this case my flickr account) to be displayed on a different one. Flickr does NOT allow this, unless your link includes a clickable link to the page on flickr that the image appears on. Also, when you do this, if I delete the image, move the image, or change my account, then the image will "disappear" leaving you with an "image cannot be displayed" message. This does not mean your cover has disappeared form other sites (unless you used the same hotlinking method) and it does not mean your image license has been revoked, it simply means the image no longer exists at the location it used to be. (Think of a link like an address. If you move and leave no forwarding address, when people send a request to your old mailing address you don't answer the request because you're not there. It's the same thing for the image. The image is hosted at an address. if I move the image, it is no longer at that address.) I'm sorry, but it is not my responsibility to host images for your websites, blogs or forum posts. you need to upload them to YOUR site yourself.

Why are you no longer doing wrap around covers except for Lulu and Createspace?

Pure and simple, they are too time consuming. I have my own blogs, websites, family etc. to do and I am too swamped. However CreateSpace and Lulu are easy to work with (I have my own books through them, in fact), so I am willing to make covers for them.

What do I need to provide you with for a back cover?

You will need to communicate any design idea you have, as well as sending me the content, such as the synopsis for the back of the book, any author bios or author photos, etc. You can send text as either an attachment or in the body of the email, or I can leave the space blank and you can use a cover Creator (such as LuLu or CreateSpace) or an art program to add the description, etc in later.

Do I NEED a back cover?

Only if you're publishing through CreateSpace, LuLu or another POD, and then it depends on what you want. You might be able to do it yourself in the cover creator. If you are publishing eBook only then, no, you do not need a back cover. In fact, there's really nowhere to put a back cover on eBook sites.

What if I need both an eBook cover AND a wrap around cover?

If I have already completed the ebook cover, then the cost of a wrap around cover is $50 I don't see any reason to charge you for the front cover twice.

What do I get with a wrap around cover?

You will get a PDF file for direct upload to your POD, as well as a single image of the front cover alone. These are very convenient to have for marketing purposes. If you need more than one size, please let me know.

NOTE: Wrap around print covers have to be converted to CMYK color space as opposed to RGB that your monitor displays. This means you will see a color shift from what it looks like on your monitor vs how it prints. It is usually very slight, but it's there.

What do I need to send you for a wrap around cover?

If you are publishing through CreateSpace, then you can send me your page count, trim size and paper choice (white or cream) and I can do the calculations myself. I will also need all information that you wish to appear on the back cover.
If you are publishing through Lightning Source you can go to their site and get a template or you can send me the ISBN number, trim size, page count and paper choice and I can get the template myself.

Do I need to send you a barcode?

Probably not. If you publish through CreateSpace they will put the barcode on the book for you, and if you're going through Lightning Source they provide the barcode for free in the cover template. If your book is eBook only, there is no barcode. If you're publishing through someone else, then you will need to ask their customer service about the barcode.

Do the file names matter?

It does for Lightning Source. I will name your cover file with the correct name so all you have to do is upload it. For Createspace, Smashwords, Amazon, etc. the name does not matter. However, I suggest you check your publisher of choice's site before you upload to avoid naming errors.

So, about those cover fonts....

Yes, fonts have to be licensed in order to use them in commercial capacity. I have a font package that I purchased, which allows me to use them on your covers. If you have a particular font you want me to use then it needs to be available for free commercial use (most font sites will tell you this when you download, or check the "read me" files that come with the font) or else you need to have purchased a license for the font (which will entitle me to use the font ONLY for your project, and then delete the files from my computer). In either case, you will need to send the font file to me, or a link where I can get it. I will NOT purchase a font JUST for you. Fonts are $30 plus. Think about it.
If you would like to find a font, DaFont.com is an excellent site for fonts, and it tells you each font's license on the right hand side.

Do you also do illustration work?

I can, but at the moment it's probably not realistic for a large project.

I like your site. Did you make it?

Thanks. I did all of the design and graphic work for the website, but my husband programmed it in Flash. I'm afraid I only know basic HTML.

Can you make web graphics/wallpaper/icons/buttons/banners
for me?

Sure. Let me know what you need and we'll discuss the price. Know that commissioned artwork fees do apply. In other words, a wallpaper featuring custom art work would start at $65, depending on what you wanted. Banners start at $15.

I need help formatting my document. Can you do that?

No, I am afraid I can't. However, I can recommend a wonderful friend named Christy as a formatter. you can reach her at https://www.facebook.com/PhoenixQuillFormatting for a price quote.

Do you do editing work?

Yes, I do full manuscript editing with line edits, plot holes, and grammar checking. This process can take up to 30 days to do and my cost is $40 per 15,000 words for a first draft edit, $20 per 15,000 words for a clean draft edit .

Is there anything else I should know?

I am not available for work on most Sundays or Mondays because of preexisting commitments, so that may affect how quickly you get your cover. I also like to occasionally take a day or two off. Other people get to take weekends, after all.

Covers can go faster, or take longer, depending on how fast you’re available for feedback.

If you have any questions not covered here, or are interested in a cover then please message me at bookwormproductions123@gmail.com . Hope to hear from you soon!
